Dining Room Redo! - Part 1

I have decided to tackle another room in my house. I have already completely redone the living room, so it is time to take on the the room closest to it...the dining room! I am very excited about this! A little over a year ago, we replaced all the flooring in the dining room, living room and my bedroom (it is all the same now). So the floor is done, but the walls, trim and decor just need an overhaul.

My house is over 100 years old, so it still has that lovely, heavy baseboard. At least, in most areas. When the previous owners did some "remodeling" they removed this in the dining room and replaced it with a very "short" baseboard which does not match the substantialness of the original. So my first thought was, see what I can find at the local home improvement store that will blend. Well, there is nothing. So, my next thought was, see what I can create from several baseboards to recreate the original. Well, not much luck there either. Then it hit me! Wainscoting!!!! This will be more substantial than what is in the living room, but will work perfectly for that "blending" effect! Then, even better luck came my way. My sister's sister-in-law's house was being demolished and guess what was in one of the rooms? Yep, knotty pine wainscoting. My wonderful brother-in-law carefully and painstakingly removed it all. I am so excited to get this on the walls!!!! Thanks Lolita and Rick!

But first things first...paint. I have painted the top 2/3 of the walls cobblestone. I have one coat done and need to do another.
Before 1st coat of paint

After 1st coat of paint

This color adds so much warmth and depth to the room. It actually makes it feel larger but it also feels warm and cozy.

The light fixture was changed out a couple of weeks ago. My sister replaced her light in her dining room, so I took her old one. It fits perfectly color wise and style wise. I love it! She and I installed this on our own, at 10:00 at night. I just couldn't wait to get it installed!! :-)  (The old fixture was straight out of the 80s!) It hangs from a medallion on the ceiling, which will be getting a makeover as well, saving that for Part 2.

Next I will paint the trim. I am painting all the trim in the house white (the living room is already done). The previous owners had painted it a flat blah color. The glossy white really makes it stand out! Then it will be time for the wainscoting.

I tried to get some pictures here of the blah trim color, but it is so darn blah it doesn't come through very well. You will see the difference once the trim is painted the glossy white. I guess you will have to wait for the update in Part 2!

What is your favorite feature in your dining room? Is there anything you would like to change about the room? I would love to see what you have done in your home. Don't forget to come back for Part 2!
