Not Just for Books Anymore

Ahhh, bookshelves. We all have them, but how do we all use them? There are many uses and they can be as decorative as functional. I have two bookshelves on either side of my fireplace. Since they are more functional than decorative right now, I decided to give them a makeover.  Here is what they looked like before I started:

I considered different treatments, like the following:
  • Painting the backs an accent color
  • Graphic wallpaper on the backs
  • Stenciling the backs
  • Cover the backs with fabric
After much looking at and for each of these options, I settled on covering the backs with fabric. And there are so many to choose from! Limitless! I knew the general color combination I wanted and that I wanted something that would get noticed. My wonderful daughter helped find this great fabric! Even better, it was on clearance for $1.50/yard...so this makeover cost me $7.50 and I have plenty of fabric leftover for another project. :)

After removing the backs, I cut the fabric to size and stapled it to them, then reattached the backs. Simple! and such impact!

Then came reorganizing everything on them. Bookshelves are not just for books! Mix in pictures, candles, vases, greenery...whatever your heart desires!

Just have fun with it and make it your own! A bookshelf is just a bookshelf until you give it those (The) Finishing Touches! How do you decorate your bookshelves? Have you given yours a finishing touch? I would love to hear from you! Please leave a comment and let me know what you think!
