I'm Just Not Crafty (boo)

I thought I would give this craft thing another try. This has just reinforced what I have suspected for a long time. I'm just not crafty....boo. I wish I was. But alas, the truth is out. I am going to share with you the little project that has cemented this fact for me. First, I had some GREAT inspiration!! Fablifyit (FabDecor) has some great stuff and has inspired me several times. For example:

I loved this little stacker so much, I went to the shed knowing I had some pieces of 2x2. And wouldn't you know, they were even cut to varying lengths. I didn't have to do a thing.

I'm feeling like, hey! This is meant to be! I can do this. I decided to paint them the color I used in the living room. I have some left over, so why not? I was planning on this going in the dining room, so figured I would bring some color from the other room in.

This part went very well. I can paint. No problem. But then it is time for the crafty part. Sigh. I went back-n-forth on just what I was going to put on these. I had a couple different ideas, but settled on 'Welcome'. Not too tough, right? I had some old die cuts left from my scrapbooking days and figured I could use them as stencils. Again, things seem to be going fine.

I decided to make the "W" one color, with the remainder of the word in another. Red for the "W" and a custom mixed color the rest. And here it is. In all its, ummmm, glory?

Seems naked to me. So I dug a bit and found some little bitty terra cotta pots. I have had these things for years. Since way back when I first thought I was crafty, then thought maybe I would grow into it, so I saved them. I added them thinking they would help.

Just seems blah to me. I don't know. Maybe there is a class I can take. I should check into that. I'm going to stare at it for a few days and see if anything comes to me.

So I'm not crafty, but I CAN paint! I found this next item at the thrift store. I call it a milk can, but I don't know why. With the way it's painted, it gotta be from the 90s, right?

Well, I love her shape and had the perfect spot for her. Since I call it a milk can, I decided to paint it white. Simple. All white. Clean. And then I added a bag of raffia to it for texture, which by the way, I picked up for 50 cents at said thrift store. I didn't even take it out of the bag. I just scrunched the bag down and stuck it in the can. Works great for fall, and it will be so easy to incorporate this into all the seasons. Here she is now!

SEE! THIS I can do!

So how crafty are you? I'm sure you are waaayy craftier than me. Have you had any fails like me? I guess we can't all have the same talents. I mean, what fun would that be? Oh well, I will keep trying! Maybe I will get to be half as good as Melissa at Fablifyit. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  1. You ARE crafty! Just look at what you did with the vase and raffia. That's what crafting is all about. Now, take a look at your picture of the letter "stencils" you placed on e l c o m e. Keep looking at it. Do you get where I'm going? The colorful blocking of the stencils? Just recreate that with paint. Just an idea!

  2. I agree with Gail you are crafty. I had a friend that was awesome at diy decor. I was talking with her one day about making things and she said my problem was that I tried to hard which made things complicated. I have learned to just let things kinda make themselves. Keeping that in mind I am not the craftiest person around, but I just keep on keeping on.
Okay brainstorming here. How about painting each of the wood pieces a different color and then paint them white and distress them. Then stencil something on each one and lightly distress the words. Looking at the sample photo it's very uncomplicated, but the different colors make it stand out.

    1. I'm not sure why I didn't paint them each different colors. I had thought about it. I guess, sometimes, I don't trust myself. Gotta get over that! I have already moved this sign around a little and just changing its location makes it look different. Weird. I'm sure this isn't the last of my messing with it...I'm sure it will evolve. Thanks so much for stopping by and for the great encouragement! I appreciate it!

  3. I think you're crafty too! All we can do is try. Sometimes I have to live with something a while and keep walking by and looking at it before the light bulb goes off and I see what to do.

I think the colors work. I would seasonally add a ribbon or raffia tied between the C and O and put a bit of moss in the top of the flower pots and again seasonally buy a pick of flowers and snip a few in each pot.

Just keep trying and have fun! ~pat

    1. Thanks Pat. I'm the same way when it comes to living with something a while. All of a sudden, bam! I know what to do. And then I think, why didn't I think of that before? Ha! Life! Gotta love it!

I love your ideas of adding season touches. I was think of that too. I'm sure it will get changed up, and when it does, I will post an update. Thanks again for all the encouragement!

  4. I always find myself adding a little of this and a little of that (brb gotta go see where my pinecones and acorns are). I bought a small pack of pinecones and acorns yesterday and I can't wait to add them to the arrangement. They are laying my flooring in the living room today so I can't mess with it until thats all done.
